Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) . Over the past 10 years, increasing numbers of article support the efficacy of TMS in the treatment of PTSD. Of note, unlike depression and anxiety, the efficacy of TMS in the treatment of PTSD appears to be much more robust when TMS is coupled with concurrent Trauma-focused therapy. For a recent review of the efficacy of TMS in the treatment of PTSD see the following article: Novel Approaches for the Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Systematic Review of Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation Interventions and Insights from Clinical Trials. for the full article click here.
Some key factors that indicate a good candidate for TMS therapy are: - Treatment-Resistant Depression: Individuals who have not experienced relief from depression symptoms despite trying multiple antidepressant medications often benefit from TMS. Individuals with more severe symptoms tend to experience the most improvement. - Intolerance to Medication: Those who cannot tolerate the side effects of antidepressant medications or are unwilling to continue to try medications to treat their symptoms might consider TMS as an alternative. - Non-Invasive Preference: For individuals seeking a non-invasive treatment option, TMS provides a viable alternative without the need for anesthesia or surgery, or the somatic side effects associated with taking anti-depressant or other medications.
